What if you end up in the hospital and get crippling medical bill after your stay? I don't want to have health insurance, but if I end up in the hospital for like twee weeks because of a bizarre accident or something I would go bankrupt.

Stop living in fear

Don’t believe the prices you see online. If you are out of pocket, they’ll give you some kind of discount once things are done so that they can at least recoup some of their money. It may not be cheap but it’s not going to be $125k they know they’ll never get paid

Just think it sometimes makes sense to have health insurance. From my own experience and some people I know 🤷

I never disagreed with that, I just said you shouldn’t blindly trust viral pictures on the internet of hospital bills because it works differently. Do what’s best for you.

This is a reasonable question. Freak accidents happen more often than you’d think. I worked in a trauma center for over a decade and saw many people with no insurance end up in terrible situations. For example, an 18-year-old kid was driving on the freeway to visit his girlfriend when a construction sign blew over and the post went straight through his chest. He survived, but his medical bills were astronomical. I assume he eventually settled on some kind of payment plan, but if you’re uninsured, you should have a plan in place for emergencies, especially if you’re holding a stack of sats you want to protect from liquidation, and even more importantly if you have kids or a family to provide for.
