I'd like to start a foraging map that people can add to, google maps for foraging and finding free sources of food.

Are there any decentralised mapping apps that could be used for this? Or any other open source apps that will work?

Great idea!

Interested in contributing! I don’t know a map for you, though.

Something similar exists at fallingfruit.org, but it’s urban-focused and uses google maps.

That's sounds like what I'm thinking about, would just rather avoid google.

Maybe the OpenStreetMap project

if you're thinking "people" = anyone outside 20 sq km and over 20 souls then no. that idea is the antithesis of the foraging ethic. tho if we're talking scavenging, go for it.

if you're thinking just you and the guys, you could use atak. it needs a beefy phone for the fun stuff but runs fine on pixel 4a w/ grapheneOS. load in pdf or other maps. all kinds of symbols and markup. bit of a learning curve but good vids on youtube.

The idea would be to inform locals on your area but works for the world on one map.

It wouldn't be to attract commercial collectors or people to raid areas.

But I can see your point that that could occur.

Look into iOverlander. Likely not decentralized but I know you can add GPS coordinates to it with descriptions. It’s an extremely useful app if you like to explore. I’ve found a lot of places I wouldn’t have otherwise just going to check out pins.

Mapstr?

That's a name I was thinking about, does it exist?

Not yet, as far as I know. I was thinking about how to implement it today. I think we will see it eventually

A forager never gives up their secret spots πŸ˜‚ but I like the idea overall

You can post what plants are located where.

Nice, thanks.

Someone will come along and take everything there and not leave any to reproduce after its kind. Good intention, but not well thought out.

Hey here are a couple options:

https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/

https://en.mapy.cz/

I found them here: https://safereddit.com/r/degoogle/comments/182z7i6/alternative_to_google_mymaps/

In the name of all that is green and good, proceed with caution. There is no good reason to share *foraging* info with non locals and folks who don't know how to forage. The best intentioned folks do the most terrible things.
