It doesn't say much. Jacob had just arrived to the land with his family and purchased land from the "children of Hamor", Shechem's father.

They first come into the narrative in Genesis 33 and are wiped out in 34.

Apparently Jacob's tribe wasn't in town long before the upheaval. In Shechem's defense, he begged his father to get Dinah as his wife. The scriptures say they actually went to Jacob's tent to commune with him after Shechem makes the request of his father.
