my 6th fitbit in 10 years just broke.

Now that they have been acquired by google I want to take the opportunity to migrate to a freedom respecting, open source alternative option for a fitness tracker (not a smart watch if possible).

requirements:

-must track heart rate

-must track steps

-must auto-detect excercise

-must be open source and freedom respecting or making that its goal.

any tips are appreciated

My Garmin does the first three only. Would be good to have all four.

do your garmin require syncing to the cloud to view data on mobile app?

It used to sync happily with the wifi off, haven't tested for a while.

I don't have any Garmin cloud account, but I still don't trust the app not to upload.

i just spent over an hour searching the web for all kinds of devices.

Anything good looks horrible and probably isn't comfortable either.

I especially would be happy with a device that would let me know my heart rate live at any given time along with step counter.
