my 6th fitbit in 10 years just broke.

Now that they have been acquired by google I want to take the opportunity to migrate to a freedom respecting, open source alternative option for a fitness tracker (not a smart watch if possible).

requirements:

-must track heart rate

-must track steps

-must auto-detect excercise

-must be open source and freedom respecting or making that its goal.

any tips are appreciated

My Garmin does the first three only. Would be good to have all four.

Following with interest...

do your garmin require syncing to the cloud to view data on mobile app?

It used to sync happily with the wifi off, haven't tested for a while.

I don't have any Garmin cloud account, but I still don't trust the app not to upload.

i just spent over an hour searching the web for all kinds of devices.

Anything good looks horrible and probably isn't comfortable either.

I especially would be happy with a device that would let me know my heart rate live at any given time along with step counter.

I don't think this exists. RIP Pebble. Many years ago people were asking them to open source their hardware and software when they shut down but that didn't happen.

You’re right that it doesn’t exist. I’ve been searching for a pebble time replacement since Fitbit bought Pebble and squashed it. The Google acquisition was the icing on the cake. You can still buy a Pebble time, or a HR2, but they never made the pebble time 2 (with heart rate) that would have been the dream device.

I have finally settled on the Garmin Forerunnier 255. Do I trust Garmin’s data handling practices more than Fitbit/Google? Yes. Should I? Probably not. Regardless, Garmins don’t have a reputation for breaking like Fitbits do. Garmin feels much closer to a Pebble in terms of customization and data accessibility. It has a color e-ink screen (this was huge for me) and buttons instead of a touch screen, which means a 7-10 battery life even with an onboard GPS. It allows for some open app development but is not open source. It’s definitely less like a smart watch and more like a tracker with notifications. Ive had it for about 6 months now and it’s the first device I’ve been happy with since pebble.

Google os open sourcing PebbleOS

Yep. I just heard about this today. Pretty exciting. 🫂💜🤙🏻

Seems you want an Apple watch

Apple is not open source.

Probably the worst possible choice.

Proprietary hardware, software, and platform.

Apple is a malware corporation.

PineWatch has these features.

PineWatch has these features, I have one, but it will take a few ten/hundred thousand hours of work to get where Android/Garmin/Fitbit/Apple are right now in terms of UX , accuracy and integration.

This looks like it might fit the bill

There are some smart rings out there that might work.

yeah but i want a watch lol

I don't know if this is what you're looking for or not, but I thought I'd toss it out there

Looking for the same thing. Or at least the app that does this with existing trackers.

theres a ring and a braceet powered by Solana that pays you for your data instead of stealing it.

kindof interested in that, atleast a way to get more BTC

Hmm, I don't really want to earn anything, just keep my own data private.

Same here lol
