From what I understand, it's very difficult for a Western business to buy a Japanese public company and much easier to limit themselves to a mutually beneficial agreement like Microsoft did with Sega and Sony.
Which is why I think that a Sony buyout is more plausible, but that rumor has been floating since last year.
