When a statist tries to articulate their idea of what being "responsible" is:

"I try to be responsible. I vote. I pay taxes. I invest my savings in a conservative mix with a lot of bonds. I listen to the news. I listen to all 2 sides of a controversy carefully before I decide which side's narrative to believe."

Maybe we shouldn't have given the voters such great power.

If people didn't believe the facade though, would we be living in a safer or a less safe place today?

I would think probably safer.

A vote without skin in the game is an attack on those who do.

Yep

Though everyone has skin in the game. That's where the ultimate perversion of it comes into play. Everyone is attacking everyone.

Who were not permitted to vote in ancient Greece?

The percentage of the population that actually participated in the government was 10% to 20% of the total number of inhabitants, but this varied from the fifth to the fourth century BC. This excluded a majority of the population: slaves, freed slaves, children, women and metics (foreign residents in Athens).
