I think the electricity comes from the ionosphere where the lightning hits the ground, but I could be wrong. That’s what my brain just told me and I haven’t verified, but feels accurate.

Clay and humus particles in the soil are both negatively charged. Clay particles from "plate" like structures akin to an old plate (acid) car battery. Calcium, magnesium and other nutrients have a positive charge and they adsorb to the clay and humus. In turn the clay and humus, together with the nutrients are an electrical system.

The soil is an electrical system.

That is fascinating and has my wheels turning!
