basically, anyone can post a picture plus comment anonymously

replies constitute a thread

threads are grouped into 'boards' by interest (politics, guns, various forms of pornography, etc)

threads are shown in order of most recent reply

only a limited number of threads is shown at any one time one any given board, with the oldest ones being deleted

so it herds people into a limited number of conversations but you can create your own conversation if you'd prefer

It was the most wonderful and most awful place on the whole Internet.
