western cuisine has very little of the sweet and sour combination, that's why it's so much associated with china. but it's nonsense. what is strawberries and cream? instead of lactic acid and sugar it's citric/malic/etc acid and sugar.
sour milk is an acquired taste but once you get used to it, you prefer it to sweet cream and sweet milk. it's better for you. we can digest that sugar, yes, but it makes you put on more weight, and stresses your kidneys splean and pancreas. the fermentation also softens the casein protein making the amino acids more bioavailable.
i bet you can substitute sweet fruit too, like bananas, plums and peaches and still enjoy eating it. canned fruit "in natural juice" would also work, i'd stay away from the sweetened kind.
you are reminding me that it's been quite some time since i ate sour cream. it's a staple in the balkans.
actually, in a lot of south american cuisine it's also a thing, except the sweet comes from corn (tacos, tortillas, burritos, all of them can optionally include sour cream).
