if the fabric is plain weave, launder the sheets and rip all the hems off. I mean rip, not cut. this will give you a straight edge. if it's twill or satin, then you can't rip. fold along a grain line and trim the excess from the biasing.

the downside is that you will have to hem all the sides.

I’d honestly be worried about the dye vanishing in the wash! Nah, they’ll do. People will be looking at the quilts, not the seams on the backdrops.
