Try the 4D approach to pruning. Prioritize your cuts in this order :

1. Dead : cut away all dead branches.

2. Diseased: cut away about 1/3 and then treat the dis-ease.

3. Disfigured: fix problem areas such as crossing branches.

4. Dysfunctional: suckers, or those that don’t produce flowers or fruit.
