Lately I’ve been relaxing to carpentry videos. There’s something really pleasing about seeing things built from nothing. And the sounds of wood and tools are low key asmr 🤣

That got me looking at my tools … or should I say the total absence of them. I only have super basics and crappy brands. Looking at tools they are quite pricey! I don’t plan on building anything big but it’s nice to have a really nice set of tools handy when you need them.

A great way to get good (used) tools at a discount is to go to estate sales in your area.

Good idea

it's also nice to be fit. walk then run. pushups. you're your first tool.

pawn shops are better

Depends on the pawn shop and on the estate sale.

pawnshops are always there

estate sales are picked over by professionals

They can both be wastes of time, and they can both not be. They both carry the same risk of wasting your time, like this conversation jfc

nope. estate sales are entirely hit or miss, as professionals have over 60% of the time swooped in already and taken anything of value. less organized too.

don't comment about things of which you know nothing about.

pawn shops for the win.

gfy

I bought most my tools at estate sales. Bought almost none at pawn shops. Speaking from experience. Such a dumb thing to argue and insult over

For people who are not close-minded, you can enter a zip into estatesales.net and find sales near you.

Alot of times they are under pressure to empty the house out as fast as possible rather than get what items are worth, especially on used tools.

If the deceased was into tools, it offers a lifetime collection at bargain prices

oh wow, not a single estate sale in my zip code. how incredibly useful. gfy

yay good for you. doesn't mean for MOST people that they're going to be a good target. especially in the last 5 years.

no insults, just explitives

it's not dumb at all. this idea is central to my identity. i had my childhood ripped awah by an estate sale.

insulting close minded fag (that's an insult)

you're the one who insulted and swore first, just for the record. swamp turd.

I’ve been subscribed to Christopher Schwartz’s substack, found him via https://lostartpress.com/collections/the-anarchist-series-of-books

I really love the aesthetic of stick-built chairs now, when I get the space I plan on building his anarchist’s tool chest and getting into it as a hobby. I also have no tools for it, just basic household stuff.

It looks rewarding, and as I’ve gotten older I’ve really taken a preference for this kind of hand-made, long lasting quality.

I work in the trades. I am at the point in my career where I buy the best tool available for the given task. Not necessarily the most expensive, but often so. High quality tools are essential.

Check out Mr. Chickadee on youtube. There's some really great vids of him building an entire house from start to finish using traditional Japanese post and bean joinery techniques. Pure relaxation 🤙

Man, I love those. So satisfying!!

Chinese teapot making for me. With the sound muted. I just put it on in the background and let it run ...
