Alright my quail people, we have questions!

What setups do you have for them?

What temps do they handle well without supplemental heat? We don't get below 0.

What fodder do they like? We don't just want to feed feed.

Any other tips you have we're looking at getting some soon, for both meat and eggs. We've done a lot of reading and talking talking with the one person who had them but putting it out to the masses.

.. and if someone had them but stopped and got rid of them, why?

I'm curious when people used to do something but don't anymore... too much work for little reward? something better come along? what are you doing instead?

I know our friends got rid of their quail because she had her gallbladder removed and became intolerant of eggs, all eggs not just quail eggs.

interesting,

thanks for the reply.

We have 6 hens in a 2 room cage, about 18x48”. One (smaller) room sheltered, one more open. I closed off 3 sides of the bigger room for the winter, and put an electric heating element into the water to avoid freezing. We use auto feeders for water and trad feed, and give them black fly larvae as treats. They’ll peck away at celery, lettuce, etc, but they haven’t consumed the greens very thoroughly.

Thanks for the info! One more question, how cold do you get during winter?

We’re in zone 6, so usually above 0 F

Thanks, we're zone 7 and stay mostly above 10, so that helps a lot!
