I am a bit confused by how lightning works with Alby. When I open a channel using Alby Hub it costs about 19000 sats. Is that going to an on-chain miner as fee or does it go to the operator of the node to which I am connecting?
It goes to the node that opens a channel for you. It's a paid service for them as they need to lock a lot of capital so you have a nice big and reliable channel.
You can also open a channel to them with on-chain flow, without additional cost (except onchain fee), but they may close it after some time if you don't use your channel
