Am I right in understanding that prior to 1948 the Jews had no country of their own for the past few thousand years?

A historical nation of people who have been around for thousands of years and they never had a country, until the British established Israel 75 years ago?

Authentic believers in Judaism say, that they're not supposed to have a state. Apparently this is written in a holy book, the Torah.

But some Zionist sects, notably Gush Emumim, believe that they, collectively, are the Messiah.
