I'm more inclined to think that consumerism stifles effective popular dissent to an overbearing political class and is more likely to encourage indebtedness, ie. Empowering the financial apparatus (banks et al.)

The state collects more in a consumerist environment if there's a sales tax, or a high sales tax, but that's rarely the case in the US, is it?

I do not know the US tax system but in Europe on the one hand the consumer is taxed for the purchase of any product and also the seller.

It's also about buying vs saving. If you are forced or encouraged to consume, you can't save.

If you dont save, you don't become independent from state "welfare" and "protection", " 'free' education" and so forth.
