What always annoyed me about Bitcoin fanbois is that they call everything else a "shitcoin" by default, supposedly, because Bitcoin is the original coin.

Like, yeah, when it comes to popularity, Bitcoin is the thing but when it comes to the actual math, cryptography & overall satisfaction rate with how the technical aspect of Bitcoin works, it is actually one of the biggest shitcoins I have ever experienced.

I am interested in the Blockchain & Cryptocurrency tech since a pretty long while & have ventured across many coins out of curiosity, without committing to any coin. Was just reading about how they work & sometimes participating in their communities & always mining a bit to test & for fun, not for profit.

After all these years of experience, I got to Nostr, set up my Lightning stuff & this was the hardest Cryptocoin related setup I needed to ever do in my life, regarding any Cryptocurrency setup. I set up so many different wallets & systems up in my life, but this Lightning stuff was an utter nightmare, even when it has the most documentation available of all on the entire world. (Bitcoin wallet itself is a piece of cake, though.)

You know, some coins don't need a Lightning network, because they are already fast enough themselves. No need for a workaround as a second layer on top.

The other big thing annoying me about it is how Proof of Work needs so much power & yet fanbois accept & ignore that fact. The biggest argument I hear about that is "well, if you compare this energy waste with all the Fiat energy waste, Bitcoin uses much less power" or something like that. Like, even then, Proof of Work still uses up immense quantities of power, when there are already plenty of alternatives available.

Now, I know, I won't make friends here with these statements, but I don't give a fuck, because I am against fanboiism in any regard.

Like, I'm a Linux Pro & I'm even annoyed by Linux shills, because I object to the concept of fanboiism.

I feel that about Lightning... Without Fishcake, I would still be scrambling for a channel. It feels very VIPish - you have to be invited, or have invested, to participate. And, this is my only channel - so unless I satisfy that by the generousity of others, I can not zap anyone, since it is entirely outbound.

I feel like those fanboys forgot where they started a long time ago. Everyone has to start somewhere and shaming them for it is a big mistake, leads to rejection and can even turn into something worse. I'd rather have experimented with something and gotten experience with it than just pretending to sit on a high throne but leaving my sats to WoS/Alby. xD This's actually my favorite thing to do: Find a maxi, and check their LN Adress. All their big talk falls flat when you realize that they put their supposed-to-be decentralized currency into the hands of a centralized entity. Laughable. ^^'

I really wish some of those idiots would understand that not everyone was born with money to burn. I only have my resources because the state literally supports me due to my visual impairment. If I hadn't had it, I would be pretty boned.

So yeah, you might not make friends with most due to your opinion - but I get it, and I share it too. Except for the knowledge about other chains and stuff, got some ways to go there. x) I want to try out Monero at some point but for now, I am quite happy with the fact I have a stable Bitcoin/Lightning stack. Phew... Took forever, cost me some nerves and loads of brainpower. Sadly I can't meassure that in PoW xD

The reason why I resorted to Alby in the end, was because the whole Lightning on self-custodial premises was too much of a jump, just to Zap on Nostr. I didn't wanna go all in, just to have payments, which don't take forever. I saw Edward with Alby, so I thought it shouldn't be too bad for a couple of cents.

Additionally, self-created channels didn't seem to work & I didn't wanna waste money, even if it's low amounts, just to test whether it works & afterwards still now know, whether it actually works in real life with strangers.

Just look at your Lightning journey you shared here. You already had enough trouble too, because you wanted to do it the right way.

I don't wanna waste days of time, just to set up a Lightning wallet, which is technically not even the real deal, as long as it's only the second layer on top of the actual Blockchain.

I'm pretty sure, as long as Lightning is self-custodialy as difficult to setup as now, nobody should complain about Alby or some other service because for most non-techies this is the only possibility to actually use the Lightning layer, at all.

The self-custodial setup is too time-consuming for people like me, who are versed in tech but new to the Bitcoin eco-system & I think almost impossible for any non-tech person, except their hands are held by a Bitcoin Pro the entire journey from having nothing to having a channel, etc.

You guys nailed it.

LN, at least as it currently stands, is a UX nightmare if you want to be non custodial and trustless. And it seems the problem is impossible to get around because of it's L2 nature.

WoS defeats the point of Bitcoin "... the main benefits are lost if a trusted third party is still required..."

The closest u can get to having good UX and still being non custodial is Phoenix, but that has trust trade offs since you aren't running your own node.
