Most creators make their living on paywalled content… but hey, it makes for a cute meme nostr:note1ksm3fafvklckq6h9hwesr6shvfttadxk2uhy93qe43m2kdwpa9vsm3lkyg

Lol 🤣 true

I don't necessarily even mind paywalls if the content is good. The only thing I would love to change is how I pay it. I'd love to replace ads and paywalls with a lightning payment QR, zaps or something like that.

Especially ads. I'll gladly zap your page whatever peanuts you'd make from ads just to rid my life of them while supporting creators.

People also make a lot of money through shitcoins don't think that's a good argument. I do support content paywalls but content creators should be aware that the paywalls are notional at best. Any kind of DRM leads to surveillance as we can see with widevine.

What are you basing this “Most creators” claim on?

The thousands of people who use Patreon, substack, onlyfans, podia, gumroad, so and on…

I was one of them. I had a lot of customers at one point until I decided to focus my energy on bitcoin.

Those types of platforms seem like mix of subscription, paywalls, and v4v, with revenue coming from different activities all under the umbrella of their service. Some content given away for free. Some subscription only. People can tip. Ad revenue and sponsored content may come into play too. Giving artists tools is a good thing. I don’t think paywalls specifically are a good tool, as they don’t really protect your content, but you and others obviously disagree. We’ll just disagree on that. I think ultimately what matters more is that creators on Nostr need to have the options to generate revenue from many various activities across as many Nostr apps as they want. That mirrors real life anyway. Some of that revenue may come from tips/v4v, some from subscriptions, paywalls, physical merch sales, etc, perhaps even ads/sponsorships eventually.

Sounds about right. Musicians in YT don’t make any money from the videos. It’s all too of funnel to direct people to their sample packs, plugins and courses

It’s how most of YouTube survives. It’s not on Adsense

Nostr will replace paywalls eventually

Paywalled communities, not content. Essential difference.

And if it isn’t a paywall it is a adwall

Sure. If the only option is a paywall then surely it will work. Give options and the see how they don’t work. 1984

I’m responding to nostr:npub1lrnvvs6z78s9yjqxxr38uyqkmn34lsaxznnqgd877j4z2qej3j5s09qnw5 claiming paywalls don’t work. This is an overly broad statement. Sure if the V4V economy grows and there is no friction for micropayments, good solutions for non-custodial Lightning, better tax treatment, etc… then paywalls won’t be the best option. But for right now, paywalls work for a good number of creators and it’s silly to say they don’t work.

Paywalls works for creator for sure not so much for consumers. eg amazon, Netflix. I Guess we are bringing those practices to Nostr too.

Sorry, I’m unable to open that to read it.

I think there is some validity to both of these points.

It is often not terribly difficult to get around paywalls. However, some folks have moral issues with not supporting creators for their work. Those are the ones who actually pay the creators in V4V, even when it isn't required.

That said, paywalls that have less friction and less cost than trying to find a way around them can work. A paywalls of 1,000 sats for a piece of content is easier than hunting for somewhere it can be found for free, and it results in more than just the generous souls supporting the content creator.
