Alot of American houses, especially in the south are built on slabs, meaning shoes won't damage the flooring if one has put tile or just a cement finish.

In Canada, floors are wood and it snows outside. Keepung shoes will damage the floors.

No one is wrong, it's just a question of context.

Speaking as a Canadian, it’s not a matter of damage to floors, it’s a matter of hygiene! I don’t want outdoor shoes tracking who-knows-what in my house.
