Environmentalist vs Conservationist.

Conservationists think environmentalists sound too liberal š
Explain. (It was a serious question, not tongue in cheek). I started to say to someone earlier tonight that I felt more affiliated with one than the other. But then stepped back and wondered why and what they even meant.
No no I know. I think the environmentalists insinuation is more encompassing of actively fighting climate change and a variety of issues around environment and climate, ties in more with activism. I view conservationist as more tied to land/water, tangible āprotectionsā of land, and perhaps not as much in the activists/combat climate change camp
I know some conservationists that are more skeptical of climate change (or the level of concern) compared to āenvironmentalists.ā
Ok. This was my basic premise as well.
Conservationist = someone who cares about preserving wild spaces (potentially for a multitude of reasons)
Environmentalist = person who fights against climate change (potentially with lots of fear about what climate change might mean)
I know thatās somewhat unfair but⦠š¤·āāļø feels true?
As a conservationist I actively give to various charities that have proven to support
Pollinators, Natural resources ( woods , wetlands, hellbenders )
My current home is in a land trust that says the woods canāt be harvested for 100 years post my death. Obviously š this could change ( cause laws š¤£) but the intent is to preserve as much #nature in its natural form as possible.
Earth is worth saving IMO. Ima human & still make many mistakes but itās a small part. Personally, choose to rarely travel as well. š«
Thanks. What would you say is different about being an environmentalist?
And youāre welcome. āŗļø Sorry for my lack of manners. Still contemplating this.
What lack of manners. Iām glad youāre taking the time to contemplate with me.
Whoa 𤯠boy. My Midwestern upbringing is showing. I was raised to always say āyouāre welcomeā immediately. š¤£š«
Appreciate you understanding my mind was thinking. š«
Maybe Iāll **listen** to Silent Spring by Rachel Carson & see if it offers any clues to this answer. āļø it was credited with launching the environmentalist movement in the #USA
Monsanto did everything to destroy that woman but she persisted. One of my personal heroes š¦øš»āāļø
Say what you want about the #EPA but Iāve often found it benefits humanity when humans do evil to others.
While Iām very much a voluntarist I canāt comprehend how those in #Bitcoin world donāt see the need to work together to #create the better world. Am I making sense?
What about Ecologists?
Noā¦. š± more terms!
Iām partial to ecologists. My favorite class/teacher in high school was ecology.
To me though, this is easy. Ecologists are scientists who study the interaction between all the actors and forces in a specific environment (bounded by specific characteristics like temperature, humidity, etc).
When done well, theyāre the ultimate scholars of higher order effects.

That definition of environmentalism is so broad as to be nearly useless
I think that part or the point of "environmentalism". š . what alternative definition would you propose?
#trivium
I'll start...
first let's define the suffix "ism" :
A suffix occurring at the end of a word, base, or phrase, forming abstract nouns that denote a doctrine, system, practice, state, condition, or philosophy (Merriam-Webster, Oxford English Dictionary,

adjective
1.Relating to or associated with the environment.
2.Relating to or concerned with the impact of human activities on the natural environment or the environmental movement.
3. Relating to potentially harmful factors originating in the environment.

the English Language, 5th Edition
Using the above, for the purpose of this conversation I'll define Environmentalism as:
"A doctrine or philosophy relating to or concerned with the impact of human activities on the natural environment."
An environmentalist expects the government to fix the environment.
A conservationist takes proactive steps to conserve natural resources. There is some crossover. I would say Greta Thunburg is both an environmentalist and a conservationist.
That's how I see it anyway.
This resonates
Got confirmation from another who thought on it and said : Best answer I have is there is no difference, itās just when someone joined the movement. āļø
TouchƩ!
Naturalist is my preference.
Environmentalist has liberal undertones by today's definition with an eye on limiting energy consumption. Conservation, to me, is trying to preserve a desired state of nature.
Naturalist is observation of the world. How it changes, interactions between the components, and the greatest honor, imitation. We seek to imitate natural processes when producing goods. Blend our activities with what this landscape would look like with little human influence. Human activity seeking to adapt to nature, not overpowering her design for our own person gain.
Arenāt naturalists the folks with no clothes on the beach?!
Jk. I actually like that. Natural harmonists. Natural synergists.
A big part of that definition implies a deep humility about just how little we understand. This very much resonates.
Both are just buzzwords that donāt really mean anything anymore. However, the conservation movement is more solution oriented and is less anti-human than āenvironmentalistsā.
Permaculture was by far the best course I took in college and is a big reason why I was able to understand bitcoin.
āHowever, the conservation movement is more solution oriented and is less anti-human than āenvironmentalistsā.ā
This is how I net out as well.
I like living in a clean beautiful environment full of life.
Not all living things are suited to living in that environment.
