Is a mesh communication network device practical at this point? I know the answer is it depends. In theory it sound like a great idea but I can't imagine enough devices are out there to make it actually work.

Can you elaborate? Wired or wireless?
There is a closed source system in gotenna, which claims to do sms in line of sight of high tens miles. If I recall max 5 hops.
Don’t know about higher throughput systems, or open source options that work.
I'm thinking wireless communications texting or similar.
Apple’s AirTag system seems to me like the beginning of a highly proprietary mesh networking system, now if only it was open source and capable of substantial data transmission on most platforms….
