I highly recommend this tiny PC for LN nodes or home servers. The CPU is an six core beast. It supports up to 64GB RAM and two massive SSD's in a tiny case. eBay Refurbished means it has a 1 year warranty.

SSD's are now at all time low prices. $130-150 for quality TLC 2TB models. I like the Crucial MX500 2.5" SATA plus Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2280 nvme. Both fit inside this tiny PC allowing for RAID-1 mirror redundancy.

These machines put RPi to shame.

How does the setting up process of say a MyNode or Umbrel node differ on this vs. RPi?

You'd have to ask them. They could make it just as easy. These used PC's are cheap, plentiful, and far more capable than RPi's so the appliance OS vendors really should focus more on this target.

Some used laptop models can use two internal SSD's and 32GB RAM. This example sounds a little too broken to use as a comfortable laptop anymore but it probably would be fine as a home server. I'd pay max $120 for this one. I already have a pile of this and similar models. I can't get rid of them fast enough.

Used tiny PC or laptops, upgrade the firmware, upgrade the RAM and buy new disks. Those make far faster and more reliable nodes than RPi's.

🙏

Oh, yes, it'd be much better than an RPi for sure and at a similar price point. Mine RPis drive me crazy sometimes. I agree, it'd be nice if they facilitated setup on these kinds of older machines too.

I use the same Tiny Gen2 for my self hosted services + Lightning node.

Sounds good,will try

This is much better than a rasp :), I am a fanless (noisless) fan, it's the only defect.

Very similarly spec’d Dell Optiplex micros also available and work great 🤙

Are they too capable of two internal SSD's?

Yes, one SATA port and one M.2 internally. Ideally you’d want matching (like two M.2 drives) but it’ll still work fine in btrfs/RAID

Ah actually the higher-end Optiplex Micros (5000 series) do have two M.2 slots for SSDs and still have one SATA, though they’re a bit more expensive

Actually ideally you don't want the drive types to match. Two different drive brands and interface types are less likely to experience a random failure simultaneously.
