What bodies of water are near you? First thing to know I think is know your game e.g. species you’re after, what they eat, and when. Fish are fickle, but once you figure them out it’s more a matter of getting out there than anything else.
And by figure them out I mean what lure do they consistently go for? It is probably different seasonally and even throughout the day. Also get a synopsis for your region so you know the limits/restrictions. I would imagine many forums can be combed for specific information that will help you be successful! Used to fish with my buddy quite a lot in high school. Occasionally ate some trout. Was a lot of fun, but over time doing the catch and release thing just for fun most the time seemed cruel to me and I eventually stopped. Then life just took me on it's course.
But, doing it with someone you enjoy and spending the day outside, getting that rush when you catch one is still alluring.
