Start with a small private channel to say Start9HQ or lightning tip bot...and get a feel for sending and receiving. I dont recommend jumping in too fast to a lightning node especially in a high fee environment.
With a private channel I still need liquidity on both sides to send and receive correct?

You need inbound liquidity on any channel whether its private or public if you want to receive payments to it. You gain inbound liquidity in the channel by sending some sats out of the channel after creation.
