Why is it that when British singers talk they sound British, but when they sing they sound American?

Which artists? Maybe they transitioned to making songs for the American markets?

It is common for artists to appeal to the American market. Many artists whose native language is not English write songs in English because of the economic opportunity.

I was listening to a Leona Lewis song on the radio ("Bleeding Love" or something) when I posted the note, but I've wondered this about Ed Sheeran and others, too.
