This line from Timaeus where Solon is talking to an egyption priest ~2600 years ago is wild. My favourite theory as to why they built the pyramids so large was to protect against periodic asteroid impacts from the outer solar system causing tsunamis, mass flooding (flood myth) or fiery destruction. It was always a theory based on hunches, but after reading this section my mind was blown.

Are you a Graham Hancock guy at all?

I find it interesting, I don’t know enough about ancient history to say if they are right or wrong. I also haven't read all of his stuff, I’ve only seen his interviews with rogan.

He also has an excellent show on Netflix.

Yes. Highly recommend the show Ancient Apocalypse on Netflix. Definitely not educated enough on the subject, but it got my attention.

You should check out Ancient Apocalypse on Netflix, very good summary of his decades of work

Not only is this theory wrong -- the large preponderance of archeological and genetic evidence points against out -- it is also born out of racism and colonialism

When Europeans first came to the places like the Americas they refused to accept that the ancestors of the indigenous people they found there were responsible for the impressive mounds and pyramids and other evidence of a sophisticated culture

It fitted better onto their world view (and justified the atrocities against the indigenous) to think that a previous white civilization had spread around the world seeding civilizations, but then had been wiped out in a catastrophe

This theory was widespread in 19th century scientists circles, but as evidence gathered, by the twentieth century, scientists had found that all those impressive moments were built by the ancestors of the indigenous peoples

Slate, trusted mouthpiece for fiat academia. Again, I don’t know enough on this topic to aggressively argue one way or another, but I can tell you there was no mention of the ancient cultures that he claims came earlier than the “scientific consensus” were of any specific ethnicity or origin. In fact, he points out how diverse they were. I’m not even sure what you are saying here.

The reason for its size is mathematical, having to do with the resonance of the earth, imo. Just like lower frequency radio antennas are longer

Another possibility: humans always want to outdo each other and have the largest ego project in history.

The projects are also useful, sometimes, in boosting the morale of the nation by showing off everything it is capable of in comparison to other nations.

"No no no, WE are the best because WE made this amazing thing!"

Watch Ancient Apocalypse on Netflix. It reviews the evidence for an ancient advanced race that was destroyed when the sea water quickly rose ~400 feet around 11,000 years ago.

i watched it a bit, i never knew what to think of all these theories until I read this passage. I don’t remember this being referenced anywhere, but seems to provide some corroborating evidence.

Watch more. I especially liked the episode about the Minoan temples.

I liked the part where they showed how the wagon tracks on Crete extended far under the sea. Made it really tangible for me.

11,000 years ago was in the Stone Age . . . . 😒

Every ancient civilization has flood stories. Something very catastrophic has had to have happened in the distant past. Africa seems to have had massive floods scar it’s landscape. You can see it from satellite images. Maybe these are the same as what is written in your passage. Cheers!

Makes sense though, they were definitely constructed to last and withstand.

Personally I think partial motivation was to inspire future generations after e.g. a cataclysm.

Building something to last so long is the only way to communicate with civilizations thousands of years in the future.

Along the same point, I think that’s why Gobekli Tepe was buried so deliberately, to protect it from a cataclysm the people might have recently survived, kinda like the major earthquakes near those sites recently.

Where did this translation come from? Thanks

My take on this is that sun is entangled with another star. It is in a binary system. This star approaches our solar system and gets really close once every 25,920 years. It’s is called a Great Year. This I believe is the cause of the precession of the equinox. And when this happens both asteroid belts get disturbed causing many chunks to shoot into the solar system. Some get captured by Jupiter others hit the sun and some hit earth causing near extinction natural catastrophes.

For me the Giza plateau as a whole is a calendar that warns of when this periodically happens. The beginning of the age of Leo. When you will have the Orion’s Belt aligned precisely on top of the 3 pyramids on the spring equinox day as well as the constellation of Leo rising from the east precisely in front of the sphinx.

Last time this happened it ended the glacier maximum. It happened many times before and it will happen again.

That’s so great. I wasn’t aware of this text and enjoying looking into it. Thanks for expanding my horizons. Just curious, what led you to this, Timaeus?
