I actually only read it once, and I had a pretty strong understanding of Bitcoin before I read it. I think for most people, it's best to use other resources besides just the white paper, because some of the newer explainers are easier to understand.
Might be good to start by making sure you have a basic idea of these two cryptographic ideas: a hash and a signature. (A hash is like a fingerprint for a piece of data. A signature is like a fingerprint but only I can generate it and I can prove that I generated it.)
Hashes and signatures are vital parts of Bitcoin.
