New brooder build in anticipation for new chicks in a couple of weeks. Start with a 50gallon tub. We're gonna cut a section out of the top and then cover that opening in chicken wire.

Mark out how large you want your opening to be. I just made use of the existing lines on t he lid.

Next cut this out. I've seen people drill holes at the corners and then run a jigsaw around but I don't particularly care for the smell of of hot blades melting plastic so I just took my time with a box cutter.

Alright next cut a section of chicken wire / hardware cloth big enough to cover the opening with padding over each side. You're going to drill holes and attach the chicken wire to the lid with zip ties. At first I thought I'd drill all the holes and then attach but when I got about halfway through I realized that my chicken wire pattern didn't work well for that. So I started drilling and attaching as I moved around the lid.

That style of tote is awesome. They are nice and rugged. Nice use of it.

I can't take credit for the idea but it made so much sense when I saw it.

It’s cool too you can use zap straps on the outer factory holes to make the whole lid hinged.

Good idea! I did a similar thing with milk crates for a hinged lid on a kayak fishing crate.

Thats the style of brooder we use too, simple to make and works well.

I have two of these. They work well. I keep an ambient chick warmer, food and water in the box and I cover it with a couple 4x3 modular fencing panels. After 6 to 8 weeks, they need to be moved to their coop or a larger container.
