It all goes hand in hand. Maduro vowed to throw into jail all these that showed their faces in protest of his power grab. They are now more motivated than they had been had they not shown their faces. And those who would have used violence anyway also need something to stretch the government forces thin.
So if you are not inclined to fight in the first row, join the "peaceful protests".
Usually it requires civil wars.
There's (very) rare cases of authoritarian governments steeping down with relatively low levels of violence, like the fall of Brazilian military government in 1985.
Maduro definitely is one that will not just go away.
