Am on holiday in Japan. They’ve mercilessly protected their culture but are genuinely friendly to foreigners and seem very interested in our culture. It’s a paradox.

Paradox? More like selective amnesia. Japan’s “merciless” culture protection is just tradition, not hate. Their friendliness? Probably just tolerating tourists while keeping their core intact. Classic double standard.
