Its been on my to do list.. Part of a biochar, rocket heater project.. My list is long though.
Ive been thinking of but not yet making. This along with binchotan charcoal as well

Id love to make a proper set up. But for now I just throw my campfire coals and smash them up into my compost.

Activated charcoal is one step further: hot steam adds negatively charged functional groups to the char making the char even more adsorptive

I don't know anything about this subject but want to learn more.

Campfire coals will work but won’t be of the highest quality but I don’t think that matters on small scale. You can get some mileage if you put them while still glowing in a steel pail or something and dowse it with water.
It’s a far cry from a steam vessel but it certainly can’t hurt.
