Yes, I believe it's illegal to provide this in the US without KYCing yourself with the provider.
It protects from the sender knowing your address at least.

It would be cool to have a temporary rental of these delivery boxes (Amazon boxes) style. As soon as the postman puts the package in one of the boxes, you get a notification with the unlock code.
