yes, for a single device per identity
for multi device and email reach, PGP encrypted email is still a very secure solution if contacts can use PGP email

It's not very hard. Lots of videos on open web search for your OS of choice. Pick a good email client with PGP features.
granted, email is not as good UX and speed as an actual instant/direct messaging app

What bout Sessions?
Session is a fork of Signal that no longer uses Signal protocol, losing all its great qualities: forward secrecy, post-compromise security and non-repudiation. In addition, while not fully centralised, it's practically impossible to host your own servers, and has a shitcoin built-in.
