We are in zone 6. I drain about 1/3 of the water out in the winter. It will freeze the way it is exposed.

The eventual plan is to build a greenhouse around it so I can keep it running over winter.

I know there are 3 different families of methane producing bacteria that operate at different temperature ranges so the more consistency the better.
