"The Devil to Pay in the Backlands, his 600-page epic masterpiece on honour, courage, love, and treachery that takes the form of a first-person monologue by a backlands outlaw who makes a pact with the Devil to gain revenge. The original title refers to the veredas - small paths through wetlands usually located at higher altitudes characterized by the presence of grasses and buritizais, groups of the buriti palm-tree (Mauritia flexuosa), that criss-cross the Sertão region in northern Minas Gerais, Southeast Brazil - as a labyrinthine net where an outsider can easily get lost, and where there is no single way to a certain place, since all paths interconnect in such a way that any road can lead anywhere. The English title refers to a later episode in the book involving an attempt to make a deal with the Devil. Most of the book's spirit is however lost in translation, as the Portuguese original is written in a register that is both archaic and colloquial, making it a very difficult book to translate. The combination of its size, linguistic oddness and polemic themes caused a shock when it was published, but now it is considered one of the most important novels of South American literature."

Hi. I need to learn Portugal Portuguese. Is there online pt-pt novels that are easy enough to read by a beginner and also attractive and enthralling enough to keep me reading through the hardship?

hey, fren. anna's seems to be down at the moment, but later on you can look for “o conto da ilha” by saramago and “o homem que não sabia mentir” by raul brandão, to begin with. great, short and simple reads. nostr:nprofile1qqs2s9chs87eay8du04yfhw2t5atlq50arhdav8n4wcd60jkx43wrlqpr9mhxue69uhhwetvvdhk6efwdehhxarj9emkjmn99uq3jamnwvaz7tmjv4kxz7fwwdhx7un59eek7cmfv9kz7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcd0kz8v and nostr:nprofile1qqsqfjtqf9a0vx9wrr63g7e7tscfau7c5cj3w69pczpquqkfxa5vcwcpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qgkwaehxw309ahx7um5wfjkc6t5v4ejummjvuhsz9thwden5te0wfjkccte9ejxzmt4wvhxjme06vnv0h are the authorities here when it comes to portugal, they sure would have more suggestions. lovely handle, btw.

Thanks. saved for later

A Cidade e as Serras is a fun classic that I really enjoyed back in the day.
