the game The Long Dark is about a geomagnetic disaster set on an island in northern canada
in the game there is these periodic bursts of aurora and when it happens all the power starts flowing through all the electric devices, radios turn on, the power lines buzz, and there is a general buzzy noise everywhere... i assume their hypothesis in devising the scenario is that the magnetic field is normally so high it stops the electricity working but then when enough stellar plasma/magnetism hits, always at night, that all the electrical devices become charged and start operating as normal
it's quite a flimsy backstory but the game is fun anyway, and i like it because it's not your usual disaster scenario, it's probably more close to real... if for a time it became normal for aurora to be as far south as texas and florida for months on end because the earth's shield is way low, lots of freakish shit would be happening for sure, and there is good reason to believe that is where things are going over the next 30 years or so
