when did "mute" become the word instead of "block"?

if i am deaf and i watch tv, i can read what they are saying because i have mastered lipreading

so, muting just means that you can still see it, but you have to learn lipreading to notice

and also, nobody has to be taught reading the expressions on people's faces

so, muting is not really what i mean when i say mute
