I'm not understanding why every laptop model needs a different fan.

And shipping takes a month. Ridiculous. Standardized fans would allow local inventories and you could repair your shit in an afternoon. But no... Hundreds of different models and they all need unique parts, and yet the final products are nearly identical.

Unique parts -> you have to buy from them, noone else makes it

Could be that. I also suspect IP laws force every different company to make tiny variations

Not for fans, doubt it, it's just a design & vendor lock in issue.

Fans will be obsoleted soon

That would be nice... How though?

Does your smartphone have a fan?

The trend to lower power computing for basics will be there as everything heavy is offloaded to the cloud / 3rd party servers.

A second avenue is heat sink tech and or CPU tech advances to dissipate heat.

Lower power computing sounds good. Distributed compute, too, if I can do it myself.
