start with Mint.
you can start tinkering with the command line from there.
Is that one of the most popular ones? I know legit nothing except Ubuntu and Gnome or something lol
Mint is an Ubuntu fork
Gnome is a GUI that runs on many different distros
Why mint?
Its has a very Windows-like vibe to it.
easy to get orientated with
and from there you can poke around.
I hate Windows so maybe that won’t be a good thing? I prefer macOS as it is, with that in mind would you still recommend Mint?
For someone brand new to Linux I'd suggest something stable. Stable put you into the Debian/Ubuntu distro category.
For a desktop environment I'd suggest using KDE Plasma because you can customize it to look closer to a Mac with dock and icon tweaks.
Good Debian based would include MX Linux of Mint Debian Edition.
Good Ubuntu based would be Kubuntu or Tuxedo.
What is meant by “stable”? Others have also said this to me and I don’t know what it implies specifically
Stable means relatively difficult to break. Honestly it's difficult to define unless you have experienced something not so stable like an Arch base Linux. That shit will piss you off trying to get even the simplest of things to run.
Examples of Arch: We can see all your drives but you have to manually edit the Fstab file to get them to auto mount on startup. Package manager, what's that? Just use command line because everyone knows how to build packages from source. Another good example of stable and not stable might be x11 vs Wayland compositors. Wayland will often have screen tearing worse than a chainsaw victim at a crime scene.
Nope, as a beginner you want everything to work with a graphical user interface and you want it aesthetically pleasing.
🍾🙌🎉
I'm pretty new to it, but I've been using Ubuntu for several months and really like it. Good functionality and an experience not too different than what I'm used to with Windows.
You'll find a lot of opinions on which distrobution people like, but from what I've heard, and my own experience, Ubuntu is on the more noob-friendly side of the spectrum. I've heard great things about Mint, as well.
Linux is a little picky about what computer hardware you use, so check to see if your device is compatible. You could also test this booting from a USB drive.
Thank you!!! Yeah just about everyone else has told me to use Mint. Much to learn
I have been through most of the distros, and always come back to ubuntu - specifically, xubuntu
The beauty of all linux distros is you can test it from an usb stick as a live session before installing it finally.
That gives you the ability to check out what you're most comfortable with.
I would start with linux mint or popOS.
Ubuntu 24.10 just came out and is pretty solid. Just try something out, see how it works.
I started with Ubuntu about 7 years ago.
I've tried PopOS once but the hardware I set it up on died, never had a reason to rebuild the box.
