Agreed. I've had some good discussions about hyper-individualism... and it not being a good thing. On the surface individualism is a good thing, we love our rights and freedoms... but when taken to the extreme, people can push it too far and say things like "I identify as a head of lettuce... please respect my leafy boundaries and pronouns... ice/berg."... and we're supposed to take that nonsense seriously?
Societies need boundaries and norms.... and most people need other people.
That extreme individualism works just fine though if you temper it with an understanding of and acceptance of reality. That is not a compromise. That is a necessity no matter what. When you go to extremes, you discover the limits of your understanding. The answer is not to avoid the extreme. The answer is to discover what it truly means. At least that's my answer, as a hyper-individualist who happens to not be insane.
I choose to use the norms, boundaries, languages, and conceptual frameworks that work for me, whether original or acquired from someone else. That is a great aspect of liberty.
It's not that extreme individualism can't work... it can for individuals... but I now believe that societies will crumble that embrace it.
I'm reading The Bushido of Bitcoin and Svetski discusses problems with libertarianism... and I have to agree. I identified as a libertarian for decades... then realized that the "you do you" philosophy was causing societal harm... i.e. tranny reading hour at the local day care.
