How do I know if the verified check works or not? Will it show in my profile? I'm so confused.

If you're NIP 05 verified, then yes, it'll show on your pfp.

I have tried doing that a number of times with Alby, but it seems to not register. Or, do you see it?

It is currently showing as being unhealthy, hence the red exclamation mark on your profile. Try registering your NIP 05 with a different client. NIP05.Social is where I did mine.
