If you've been using the orangepill.dev relay over the past 6 weeks like I have, you'll be happy to know that it's now back-up and running as a paid relay!

This is how we win. We win by fighting spam and providing value to relay operators. If you want to continue to use the orangepill.dev relay, you'll want to do three simple tasks.

* Remove wss://nostr.orangepill.dev from your relay list.

* Visit https://relay.orangepill.dev and pay the Lightning invoice.

* Add wss://relay.orangepill.dev to your relay list and make sure both write and read are toggled.

What is the incentive for me to pay for relay services (besides charity)? I don’t have that much span in my feed yet…?

The incentive I believe are:

1) As user base grows, spam may increase in feed or DM's. Joining and adding only paid relays may help prevent most of that.

2) You help keep the relays running to cover costs of running it and get access to content/events/notes shared by others without the hassle of setting one up yourself.

I agree with 1 but ppl already use free services (twitter) and willingly sacrifice their personal info and tolerate spam. 2 is charity. I support the programmers works but there is no real incentive for users to pay for relay services.

In Bitcoin node operators pay miners when they want to transact. They pay for access and security. They also help enforce consensus rules. This give btc value. Maybe relay operators should make it so you have to pay to post? Like 1 sat at first but maybe a market would develop for highly available relays? Or maybe you could stratify the network? Free later at the bottom and paid layers on top? To see top content you would have to pay?

There is a relay operator model where you pay per transaction ;) That's what Nostr Plebs will be implementing. Current registered ID holds will get XXX amount of notes/events before they have to start paying per transaction. We're still working on the details.

How would this functionally work with a user's lightning wallet? Will they get an invoice every time they try to send a note to the relay? Or is it more frictionless than that somehow? I'm personally more in favor of the monthly subscription model but you have to pay more attention to resource management and adjust pricing.

Yes, it's possible right now to also enable the 'Pay per post' option. Eventually I could enable it. For now, I'm trying to onboard folks to help them get off the spam train.
