Nostr is a decentralized social network that emphasizes decentralization and user empowerment. Nostr operates as an open protocol using “relays” for sending and receiving text messages. Nostr addresses issues in traditional social media, such as monetization, questionable algorithms, centralized control, and spam.

Nostr uses relays to forward messages from one user to another. Anyone can spin up a private and public key pair, connect to a relay via a client of their choice and broadcast their information, in many cases a post, to one or several relays.

Nostr does not rely on a blockchain to function and there are no central servers dictating who can participate in the network. With the exception of shared interest and lightning ‘zap’ integration, it is independent from Bitcoin.

You will access Nostr (the protocol) via a client. Clients can be web, desktop, or mobile apps. Some Nostr clients allow you to sign in by pasting in your private key.

Nostr stands for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays. At its core, it is a system to exchange signed messages. The basic architecture can be explained in three bullets: Every Nostr user is identified by a public key. Users send and retrieve messages to servers.

NOSTR protocol’s data is not stored in a centralized location but rather scattered across numerous computers, called relays, in the network.

Nostr relays act as the go-between for storing and broadcasting public messages. A message is transmitted via the Nostr protocol and dispatched to a relay. The relay, in turn, transmits the message to all other clients connected to it. The ethos of a relay is neutrality.
