nostr:npub1aghreq2dpz3h3799hrawev5gf5zc2kt4ch9ykhp9utt0jd3gdu2qtlmhct is turning into a hell of a self hosting platform, beyond Bitcoin and Lightning. The future of computing is self sovereign. I'm impressed.
Discussion
They must have a bunch of awsome product managers and UX designers and some good genius devs ! This is attractive really. will install !
Derek, are you speaking from experience with the product? I have been looking around at different "node" solutions and saw reviews that Umbrel was problematic. I'm not sure who to believe at this point. Probably have to spin up 3 or 4 and make a decision based on my own experience.
I ran Umbrel for 2.5 years. I only left the platform because I'm a power user and needed to do more and build my own tools. If I was not as tech savvy as I am, I would still be running Umbrel.
Also somewhat tech savvy and I’ve use umbrel but now over to start9 because time savings and after all it is a bitcoin focused os
I'm tech retarded but realize the concept of self sovereignty is uber important so I was thinking of buying a Start9 server so I can get customer service for the OS. I dunno, seems smart.
Good choice.
I was also leaning toward Start9, but don't really have experience with any of them. I have plenty of vSphere / Windows server experience so I consider myself tech savvy enough to self-host something. I'm just not sure which one yet. LOL
Haha yeah I really like the Start9 story (hardware, OS and software are all sovereignty focused). + White glove support for those who buy the hardware. Hopefully the reality matches the narrative.
Support is essential for me.
I don’t need any more hardware so I’ll be happy to just donate a a little bit.
Not looking for any hand holding because I like some small self involvement
I haven't looked at it in over a year, I will have to revisit.
I haven't ran Umbrel 6 months or more, but I may install 1.0 on a VM just to play around with it.
When Flare channel?
Good point. They could post this to Flare 🥹
Take advantage of being an early creator & channel
this is actually really important and a lot of creators need to understand that now's the time to get in when we're all starved for content and will zap anything.
Its just like early zapathons. When people are starving everyone is a chef.
For any burgeoning content creators flare is a chance to break out and learn without the presure or yoke YT & its algorithm. Learn what works what doesn't and build out your channel in tandem with the protocol and its clients. Give feedback on what works and what doesn't from the POV of a creator vs viewer.
starting to look like a Bloomberg terminal drop in replacement 😮
Thoughts on start9 vs this latest iteration of umbrel?
Following
StartOS is great. I ran it for a week, migrating from my Umbrel. I stopped not because it wasn't good, but because I realized I wouldn't be happy unless I built it myself. StartOS is more technical than Umbrel. I enjoy the very granular configuration options. Umbrel is more user friendly. With backups and https coming in 1.0 I don't know what arguments I'd have to choose StartOS. I'd have to run them both and do an update comparison.
Thank you! Getting one of them running is on my to do list. Kinda procrastinating while I decide which one. Was leaning towards startOS but maybe leaning towards umbrel now.
Setup DIY Start9 today, so far very straightforward. Many have issues with umbrel being unstable and the apps being way behind on updates.
I have an umbrella node. But I have zero desire or trust to run anything other than bitcoin core, lightning terminal, and ride the lightning for management.
Perhaps I could setup a different umbrella server for everything else as a workaround to try. I don't want to mix bitcoin with other software, personally.
We've recently done a thorough assessment of the CmRat developed by DTV Electronics, and it stands out as an impressive true FOSS Bitcoin Full Node. Check it out: https://blockdyor.com/dtv-electronics-cmrat-review/
Wow, looks like nostr:npub1aghreq2dpz3h3799hrawev5gf5zc2kt4ch9ykhp9utt0jd3gdu2qtlmhct has achieved something I never expected to happen.
They made privacy and self sovereignty sexy!
Yea i am pretty excited for this update. Looks good. Windows and Mac are becoming more irrelevant by the day.
UmbrelOS is dope ! Really like the layout !!
just preordered
UI looks great.
I hope they give Bitcoin node runners a simple way to select which version of Bitcoin Core they wish to run, rather than forcing the latest release on them, by default.
Ability to change *all* config params, and have these changes persist after upgrading, is another must.
To the extent that they seek to promote decentralisation, they must let go of their ability to dictate these settings.
A potentially contentious update to Bitcoin Core shouldn't automatically be offered to the entire Umbrel user base, in the spirit of 'keeping up-to-date'.
Looks impressive, but Umbrel was nothing more than an impossible mess of docker-compose files with no rhyme or reason to the structure of the "OS." Isn't it just lipstick on Debian/Ubuntu? Or Have they changed that?
I found it extremely frustrating and limited, and God forbid anything goes wrong.
It is way easier to do the "raspibolt" type of thing and run everything bare metal. While the set up isn't a simple point and click, maintaining it and configuring it is way easier that way.
Easier for you and me to just build a node from scratch? Sure. Easier for dude on the street that wants to self host? Not so much. We have to think about others and for whom these products are intended.
