Bitcoin is not sustainable and everyone knows it (Quantum computers are coming). Buying bitcoin only benefits the miners or node runners the same as any financial broker (Bitcoin's a good deal, but for who?, Economics 1101). And there is nothing decentralized about bitcoin because the centralized groups are making the money, not the bitcoin buyers or users.
And let's be honest, the conversion fees are outragous.

How does buying bitcoin benefit node runners?

Not really. I'm not sure anyone actually makes money out of running nodes. Rebalancing fees out weight routing fees usually.
I would put it more like spending bitcoin on the lightning network is made possible by noderunners who often break even and run nodes to support the network. But that might bemy experience only from talking to many who run nodes
