Aristotle tied beauty to areté, a Greek word for excellence or virtue. Something is beautiful not just because of how it looks, but because it performs its function excellently. A beautiful sword is one that cuts well and feels right in the hand. A beautiful life is one lived with purpose and virtue.

In this view, beauty is inseparable from mastery. The more something embodies its ideal, the more beautiful it becomes.

Function over form refined endlessly, is a kind of beauty.
