I'm using iris on Android and dropped by receive address into the lightning address slot. Not sure what the issue is with it sending that out to Damus etc users?

You need LNURL. Wallets get you an invoice.
Try WoS, Alby or any wallet that offers email format address.
You can also import multiple LN wallets in Blue Wallet. That’s how I’m using Alby on smartphone.
