When streaming was going mainstream, the music industry (as others have) came to talk about two primary modalities: “lean back” and “lean forward”. An example of the former is Spotify; let the recommendation engine do the work. Apple Music, for the first many years, was on the other end, as a “lean forward”; you needed to do the work to build your library.

TikTok is the ultimate expression of the “lean back” model. Just keep scrolling. I’d argue that this is the polar opposite of nostr today.

Not to say we can’t or shouldn’t build lean back experiences, but we’re a long way from them.
