When streaming was going mainstream, the music industry (as others have) came to talk about two primary modalities: ā€œlean backā€ and ā€œlean forwardā€. An example of the former is Spotify; let the recommendation engine do the work. Apple Music, for the first many years, was on the other end, as a ā€œlean forwardā€; you needed to do the work to build your library.

TikTok is the ultimate expression of the ā€œlean backā€ model. Just keep scrolling. I’d argue that this is the polar opposite of nostr today.

Not to say we can’t or shouldn’t build lean back experiences, but we’re a long way from them.
